Working principle of guided wave radar level transmitter

Guided wave radar level transmitter is based on guided wave radar work on the principle of time and travel (TDR). Radar waves travel at light speed. Electronic units convert the flying time into level signals. Wave pulses are emitted by the probe and travel along cables or rods.


The device sends a low energy microwave pulse down a probe. When the pulse hits the media, a significant proportion of the energy is reflected back up the probe to the device. The level is directly proportional to the time-domain reflectometry.


Guided wave radar (GWR level transmitter) technology is based on the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) principle. Low power nanosecond‐pulses are guided along with a probe submerged in the process media. When a pulse reaches the surface of the material it is measuring, part of the energy is reflected back to the transmitter, and the time difference between the generated and reflected pulse is converted into a distance from which the total level or interface level is calculated.


The speed of travel of the pulse is affected by the dielectric of the medium. The travel time of the pulse is predictable and allows for compensation for the measurement. A high dielectric constant (DC) of the media gives a better reflection and a longer measuring range. It is a key parameter for measurement performance.
